MPs have criticised a Gaming Commission choice to let the owner of Ladbrokes and Coral lead a review of online wagering for VIP customers.
Carolyn Harris, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Gambling Related Harm, called it "a conflict of interest and woefully ignorant".
Gamblers with VIP status get some free bets and unique offers as benefits for wagering high stakes.
Betting giant GVC has been asked to examine how VIP plans operate.
Conservative MP Sir Iain Duncan Smith, who also sits on the APPG for Gambling Related Harm, said it was a "strange" decision by the Gambling Commission (GC).
He stated: "The Gambling Commission needs to be reformed. This truly does reveal you where the thinking has gone completely incorrect. It resembles putting the mafia in charge of looking into organised crime."
The GVC-led working group will take a look at how rewards such as hospitality and presents are used, particularly in connection with VIP programmes, and whether they adhere to licensing objectives to make betting fairer and more secure.
'Relentless' pressure
The GC's move comes regardless of the regulator fining Ladbrokes Coral ₤ 5.9 m in 2019 for failing to secure susceptible individuals betting large amounts.
Michelle, from Surrey, informed Radio 4's You and Yours that she began betting at a demanding time when she was caring for her mom with dementia.
